SEO Tips on Recovering from February Google Panda Update:
Are You a Google Winner or Loser?
If your site tumbled in Google’s index in the last few weeks you’re a Google Loser!
Yesterday Google posted on their blog that they were “celebrating” their record of making over 40 changes to their algorithm during the month of February and are even planning on rolling out additional changes today.
But at the same time Google is “celebrating’ their milestone, I can assure you that there are thousands of website owners who are “freaking out” right now because their site took a nose dive in Google’s SERPs.
SEO Tips on How to Recover
Over the course of the last couple weeks I have had an opportunity to speak with several of these “panicked” business owners, some of who we losing thousands of dollars a day because of Google’s recent algorithm changes, and compared their sites that were devalued to those sites that had increased in rankings.
We then compared our initial findings to Google’s list of their recent changes and here is what we discovered:
Link Evaluation: Google says in their post that they have “turned off” a method of link analysis that they have used for several years in their attempt to keep their system maintainable, clean and understandable.
The Losers Link Evaluation
Google isn’t clear in identifying the method of link analysis that they have “turned off” but in our research we had identified what we feel is a few trends:
- Sites that relied on using social bookmarking took a hit (superficially sites that used a black hat program called bookmark demon)
- Sites that relied on heavily on article marketing such as EzineArticles and Squdio
- Sites that relied heavily on press releases
The Winners Link Evaluation
Our findings show that the winners of Google’s algorithm changes were all built using a strong linking foundation, which included submissions to these MAJOR directories.
SEO Tip #1
Submit your website to these major directories
- Yahoo Directory – $299 annual fee
- DMOZ – Free (but good luck in getting your site accepted as they fired most of their volunteers)
- Best of the Web – $149 yearly or $299.95 annual fee
- Starting Point – $99.00 annual fee
Panda Update: Google also mentions in their blog post that they also made an update that is “more accurate and more sensitive to recent changes on the web”
Our interpretation of this is that Google is paying MORE ATTENTION to your social media footprint on the web.
Social Media Marketing Losers
Sites that have a weak social media marketing profile.
Sites that had a weak social media presence took a BIG nosedive in our comparison.
Social Media Marketing Winners
Sites that have a strong social media marketing profile.
Sites that had a STRONG social media marketing strategy came out to be clear winners during February’s Google update.
SEO Tip #2
Google cares LESS about what you say about yourself on your site and is paying MORE attention to what OTHERS ARE SAYING about your business.
So the choice is clear, you MUST develop a strong social media-marketing platform if you want to survive!

2012 SEO Tips For Google Instant
We've talk about SEO tips for Google Instant in the past but things change and Google's autocompletions algorithm within Google Instant has changed over the past six months.A WebmasterWorld thread is discussing new techniques that you may be able to use to "optimize" for the autocompletions within Google Instant - also known as Google Suggest. One SEO claimed the algorithms has changed so much that he doesn't feel it is even worthwhile to try to go after Google Instant autocompletions anymore. He said:I had a campaign last year that netted me $45,000 but recently Google changed its algo or manually edited the autocomplete for my sector. It's a neater subset. But I don't think I'll bother in the future. I assume the algo will have some special scrutiny for every major autocomplete phrase if it doesn't already. If you can rank for the autocompletions, you can make a lot of money. So why is it hard to do so now?Tedster said they have become much more localized and geotargetted.Search suggestions are intensively geo-targeted, showing different choices in different geographies, sometimes even down to the zip code level! That's going to be difficult to take into account if it affects your chosen terms. When a client of prospective client of his loses a nice chunk of traffic, one of the main things he looks at is not the SEO but if Google Instant changed the search suggestions for the query they lost traffic for. And they do often enough.Google
No B/S Google SEO Tips:
Google is a search engine which is primarily focused on link reputation. For non competitive terms a well structured document can rank ok. If your terms are competitive though you need to get many keyword rich inbound links from a variety of different sites. Some people think Google is all about PageRank, but since PageRank is too easy to manipulate the primary driving force is number of sites linking to you and the associated link text (as well as getting links from sites in the right communities for competitive terms).Google may use multiple algorithims based on the size of the community related to the search query. Where large communities exist they likely are using Google Hilltop. Where no machine identifiable community exists they likely use more primitave search relevancy algorithms.I also created a page focused exclusively on Google SEO Tips.Additionally you can appear off to the side of search results or in a colored box at the top of search results by participating in the Google AdWords program.Google History
Google came from a three year Stanford research project in 1998. Google has developed into such a legacy that people even track the original comments from its creation. Larry Page asking about his java bot .Google Algorithm Shifts
Near the end of 2003 Google began to look at search from a more community driven and / or semantic angle. In addition they tried out algorithms which appeared as if they aimed to separate commercial vs non commercial results based on these semantics. The new algorithms were not providing results which were up to snuff, so Google had to tune down much of the more advanced semantic algorithmic shifts that occurred. Why Google is Successful
While many companies over diversified and lost focus, Google initially had a clear focus on its product - search. Other companies in the search space saw search as a commodity and Google developed amazing brand. Some of the things which set Google apart from all the other search engines are that it:- set up a human aided feedback loop using Google PageRank. Google was the first engine to heavily incorporate sophisticated link analysis into their algorithm.
- clearly separates advertisements from its search listings
- created the concept of PageRank, which allows even dumb people to talk about their technology and still sound smart. By building their marketing messages into the product and making it easy to spread they built a brand which dominates the competition.
- their search results may not be much better than other search engines but they have the common public perception that they are
Google Hilltop
Google Hilltop is an algorithm which reorganizes search results based on an expert rating system. In the Hilltop white paper they talk about how they can use expert documents to help compute relevancy. An expert document is a non affiliated page which links to many related resources. If page A is related to page B and page B is related to page C then a connection between A & C are assumed.Additionally Hilltop states that it strongly considers page title and page headings in relevancy scores (in fact these elements can be considered more important than link text). Likely Hilltop also considers the links pointing into the page and site which your links come from. The benefit of Hilltop over raw PageRank (Google) is that it is topic sensitive - and is thus generally harder to manipulate than buying some random high power off topic link would be. The benefits of Hilltop over topic distillation (Teoma) are that Hilltop is quicker & cheaper to calculate, and that it tends to have more broad coverage. When Hilltop does not have enough expert sites the feature can be turned off. It is believed that Google is using Hilltop to help sort the relevancy for some of their search results today. Google Hilltop is part of the reason that on topic links are important in competitive fields.Submit Your Site to Google
Though the best way to get listed in any search engine is to be found from a link from another site, you can get listed in Google by adding your site free at the Google add url page , or by using the following form below. Why do my Google rankings change frequently
Google is on a rolling update of the web and has multiple data centers. In the past Google did a monthly dance. Google still does major updates about once a month and a continual smaller rolling update. Google also tests many new algorithms on the live web each month.Instead of focusing on trying to tweak your pages in perfectly the best way to improve Google rankings is to get more keyword rich links pointing at your site.Checking Inbound Links & Pages Indexed in Google
To check and see if your site is listed in Google , perform a search. If you are listed in Google you can check your incoming links using link:www.url.com. Please note that Google only shows a random partial sampling of backlinks using the link function. To see if this site was listed I would type the following text in the box (with quotes) "+www.search-marketing.+info"On their results page the colored portion at the top are paid listings as well as those off to the right side. The ads on the search results page are called Google Adwords. There is no way to pay Google money to list in Google's regular search results. The Google Toolbar
The Google toolbar (download) shows PageRank and also has a backlink lookup feature. On top of both of these elements, the Google toolbar also allows the user to highlight certain words in the text. More in depth Google Toolbar information.Google and Spam:
Google is primarily a mathematical company and they do not like to edit their search results. They did edit out WhenU for cloaking once they found out about it, but usually they take care of spam via algorithms. You can report spam to Google to help them improve their algorithms if you want to, but they usually will not update their search results to reflect specific spam you report. If your site is kicked out of the index for an automated spam penalty it will usually come back after 60 days if the thing that triggered the spam penalty has been removed. You also can send them an email to help [at] google.com after you have cleaned up your site. If you are still having problems after emailing them a few times you can call them at 650-330-0100.Google Tools & Specifications:

Google fan clubImproving Onsite SEO: Tips from Google
This is the third (and last) part of our summary article on the SEO site review session panel held by Matt Cutts and other important Google representatives. Keep reading for important tips and suggestions from that panel for improving your onsite SEO. At the end of this article, you'll find a link for downloading the tips from all three articles in checklist format.Tip#29 : “Make sure there is indexable text-based content visible to Googlebot on your optimized page or website.”This is one of the common mistakes made by SEOs. You need to remember the basics, and one of these is checking to see whether or not the text can be indexed. The best way to do this is to use a text browser, such as Lynx, to diagnose crawling-related issues. If you are interested in learning more about Lynx and its uses for SEO, you can read the following tutorials:Tip#30 : “Add substantial text to your content. For websites in which it seems difficult to add text to your content, implement 'user reviews and comments' to add more text to your site. Make sure your website has enabled the ability to add user comments. ”This is one of the most useful suggestions ever made during the SEO site review session pertaining to onsite issues (i.e. lacking website content). So if you have a website which is designed to have less text on it (like a website full of images, flash videos, MP3 streamers, etc), why not allow user comments or reviews? In this way, when users add comments, you will gain valued, added content to your website. This is very possible and feasible to do, but this technique has a number of potential problems. I've listed them (and some suggested solutions) below1. If your website is not known, then you will never get user comments. This is particularly true for newly-launched websites that are still not receiving substantial enough traffic to drive users to comment.Potential Solution: You can tap other sources of traffic, not only search engines. You can network with other interested friends on Facebook; with other related professionals in Linkedin; you can Twitter or maybe submit your material in Stumble Upon and other places if your content and services are newsworthy and worth publishing.2. If you start receiving user comments, it might increase the chances of receiving spam.Potential Solution: You need to enable comment moderation. And you might find more useful ways to reward quality/best comments on your website. Maybe you can have a dedicated page for them with links pointing to their own website (if it's related to your website).

Do not just use the domain name as the title of the website. The title should accurate and descriptive. There are still some website owners that optimize their website for search engines but cannot even assign an optimal title for the website. You can read the details for formulating an accurate and descriptive title tag from the Google website.Tip#32: “Register your website in Google Webmaster Tools, so that you will know if your website has been hacked. This is particularly helpful for malware detection."It might be difficult to detect whether your website has been hacked, because hackers are getting sneaker with their methods. Google Webmaster Tools provides a lot of detection tools which will tell you if your website has been hacked or hosting malware.Tip #33 : “Use Fetch as a Googlebot feature in Google Webmaster Tools, for malware correction or hacking detection.”For Tip #31 and Tip #32, you can refer to this updated tutorial on the latest Google Webmaster Tools. You may want to check this page from another tutorial as well.Tip #34: “Avoid publishing content on your website which is syndicated, because it is not really original content and won't rank very high in Google. Put more emphasis on publishing original content.”Content is still king to Google. Great content can even beat any form of search engine marketing. So one of the most productive and profitable ways you can spend your time with your website is to write quality and original content.Remember that this original content is what makes your website unique, which is also important if you are marketing or branding your site. If your website's content is syndicated or otherwise not original, there is no reason for Google to rank it highly, because your content can be found elsewhere on the web. Remember that Google will only rank the canonical and the original version of the content. It is a major mistake when doing onsite SEO to put little importance on continuous quality content improvement; many SEOs will only suggest putting content on the site just for search engine purposes, which is not good; most of the time, it just looks spammy.Tip #35: “Getting a good hosting plan is a rare secret in search engine optimization. If you exceed the bandwidth limit, or any hosting issues cause your website to crash, users cannot view your website. Without views, you can't get conversions."How many SEOs ever review the quality of their hosting provider as a factor in SEO success?I have experienced working with a web host with a very poor uptime -- 70%-85% uptime. They are a free web hosting company. The website experienced frequent down times until it was suggested that the site switch to a quality web host. Before switching web hosts, the number of average unique visitors per day was only 70. After switching to a stable, 99.95 percent uptime web host, traffic increased dramatically, to an average of 300 unique visitors per day. This solution saves the client a lot of SEO money. Instead of diverting resources and campaign money to finance SEO improvements to further increase traffic, simply changing web hosts can make a lot of difference. The client can put finances into an SEO campaign for further increasing the traffic.Tip #36: “In generating snippets of your website in the search results, whether you're using a meta description or no meta description, if you are automating the process (using a server side script like PHP), you need to make sure that the snippets shown in the Google search results are natural and relevant to the search query.”You need to check your click through data (in Google Webmaster Tools) to see if you have this problem and take steps to improve your snippets.Poorly produced snippets can affect your click through in search results because it will appear that your site is not relevant to the user's query. To learn more about improving click through rate in Google, you can read the tutorial at the link.Tip#37: “Do not hide text on the page, especially by using the scroll box technique at the bottom of the home page. Make sure your text is presented for your readers and make it easy to read.”It does not make sense, even if your scroll box is over 500 pixels in height (so the text can still be seen by the readers), if inside this box you've placed around a thousand words of content. The result is very stressful to read, because the text box window is too small compared to what is inside the scroll box. Some SEOs use this technique to add content, which is not good in terms of the content's readability and the site's usability.
Tip#38: “Do not worry about unfriendly URLs (URLs that are not rewritten to contain useful keywords), if your site is stable and has lots of content.”
Some webmaster and website owners are still concerned about their URL structure -- despite the fact that they have already been using the URLs more than a year, and they are indexed by Google and getting traffic out of it.
Note that it takes six months for a permanent (301) redirect to fully mature if you are rewriting a lot of URLs. This huge drop off of traffic can be costly to your business.
So the best advice would be to ignore the unfriendly URLs if you have tons of them indexed by Google. Google says that their system will do its best to understand the URL structure of the website (for example, if you are using dynamically generated URLs).
But do your best also to solve issues such as duplicate content URLs. There are a lot of solutions for duplicate content issues which do not necessarily involve rewriting all of your URLs.
Tip #39 : “Do not optimize the same keywords for the home page and the internal pages. This will introduce canonical issues that can affect rankings.”
A common mistake is that you have a well-defined product page but optimize the home page for the same targeted keywords. The result is that the home page will rank, instead of sending targeted traffic directly to the product pages; the conversion rate in this case will be poor.
Tip #40: “TLD is not that important when it comes to ranking ”
Do not be concerned about your TLD when it comes to general ranking (as opposed to geo-targeted ranking). But country-based TLDs can be important. For example, if you need your website to be associated with Canada, it makes sense to use a .ca domain.
But this is not a strict rule. If you have a website set up to draw in visitors throughout the world, Google will know that and will rank your website in other places, not only in your own country of origin.
Tip #41: “URL Shortener should pass 301 redirect. This is the best application for URL Shortener. ”
URL shortening is becoming more popular along with Twitter and other applications. According to the SEO site review session expert, Matt Cutts, this is nice -- as long as it passes a 301 redirect to the canonical URL.
All of these tips can be downloaded in a check list format for easier implementation.
